Report Highlights Benefits of Aluminium in Transport

In a recent study by forshungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen Aachen (fka) and co-funded by the European Aluminium Association (EAA) and the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), has shown that an electric car of the VW Golf class can be made lighter by using aluminium instead of steel.

The additional cost of building a car using aluminium is more than offset by the cost savings that can be made on the battery pack as a lighter car needs less battery capacity to drive the same distance.

A summary of the key results as well as an interactive calculation tool enabling the effects of different parameters is now available online.
