First Engineered Wetlands System Treat Two Million Gallons of Wastewater Daily

Alcoa and Ma’aden Saudi Arabian Mining Company have announced the completion of a wetlands waste water management system that will conserve water and save almost £4.5 million annually.

Located in Saudi Arabia, the system collects sanitary and industrial waste water and then cleans and disinfects the water without the use of chemicals. The water is then re-used in the manufacturing process instead of purchased fresh water as done previously.

"Together with Ma'aden, we are bringing to life this oasis in the desert which will safely treat and conserve water in a way that is good for the environment and the bottom line", says Ray Kilmer, Alcoa's Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.
